There will be quarterly reviews of information pertaining to the website and web-training for routine information and immediate additions or changes when pertinent reportable diseases or conditions are made available through the Texas Department of Health.

Target Audience

The target audience for the preliminary launching of this web based training on reportable diseases and conditions will be for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, other health care providers and public health workers in the Texas Department of Health Region 8 interested in extending their knowledge and accessibility to information on this important topic.

No-charge CME - Promotional Launch Phase

This continuing education course is accredited by The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio - Department of Continuing Education and is funded by the Texas Department of Health - Region 8. The course is being provided without charge to early participants during its promotional launch phase.

Goal

To promote the reporting of diseases and conditions required by State of Texas Public Health Law and Administrative Codes to strengthen public health epidemiology, surveillance, and reporting procedures.

Course Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this web based self-study, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe in general terms the State of Texas Reportable Diseases and Conditions rationale, who, what, when, where, and how to report.
  2. Understand why reporting is so important for public health communicable disease control and prevention.
  3. Understand the procedures for reporting including the availability of telephone numbers and reporting forms.
  4. List the reportable diseases and condition categories 2.1 -2.6.
  5. Expand knowledge on issues related to reporting such as confidentiality, HIPPA regulations, and best practices for delivery of sensitive information to patients.
  6. Have available patient information sheets for use in physician offices, clinics, and hospitals.
  7. Increase knowledge of important web site links that can be referred to as needed in clinical practice.

Physicians – 1.0 AMA PRA category 1 credit
Physician Assistants – 1 credit
Nursing – 1.0 hour, Nursing Type 2
Others – 1.0 contact hour for certificate of completion

Instructions for Web Based Training

This web based self study includes three distinct modules:

  1. Introduction to Reportable Disease and Conditions
  2. Classifications of Reportable Diseases
  3. Issues in Reporting
There are two options for this training:
  1. You can review these educational modules for informational purposes and not receive continuing education credit. This web training would serve to provide education for a public health service.
  2. You can review these educational modules and then proceed to the testing section to receive continuing education (CE) credits for (1) Physicians – up to 1.0 AMA PRA category 1 credit; (2) Physician Assistant - 1 credit; (3) Nursing – up to 1.0 hour, nursing type 2; (4) Others – up to 1.0 contact hour for certificate of completion.

When the training on reportable disease and conditions is initiated for either purpose, you will be asked to provide a username and password at the beginning of the course. After complete review of the course modules you will have an option to choose CE credit, or no CE credit.

  • If no CE credit, you will then EXIT the program.
  • If yes CE credit, you will then submit information such as name, and contact information and then take a brief quiz and course evaluation.
  • If you score 70% or more you will be able to download a certificate of completion, specifying for (1) physician CME; (2) physician assistant (3) nurse; (4) other healthcare provider or public health worker.
